WASHINGTON, D. C., Dec. 7 — The Food and Drug Administration approved a new way to prevent heart attacks and strokes -- and millions of lives lost.
The drug that’s helping to spur the growth of the heart disease drug Celebrex, a popular anti-inflammatory drug for arthritis, is also being made available by Novartis, the U. S. drugmaker. The FDA, which has approved several other new medicines to treat arthritis, arthritis pain and other medical conditions, will allow the company to make available to patients, or doctors, the drug for a limited period.
The FDA’s decision came after an exclusive approval by the FDA in December came just over a month after Celebrex was found to cause serious side effects in a man who suffered a heart attack in 2013. The side effects included a “nose bleed, swelling, heart failure, sudden death and death” in his lungs.
The drug, which is available generically as a prescription drug, is not just for heart disease treatment, but also for treating arthritis.
“This is the latest in a series of serious side effects that have been reported with Celebrex. These adverse events are not just related to Celebrex but also to the increased risk of heart attacks and strokes,” said Michael Bierman, an industry spokesman. “We’ve received reports of serious complications such as chest pain, heart failure and heart attacks, and the FDA is reviewing these concerns.”
“The FDA’s decision to approve Celebrex is the latest in a series of serious side effects that have been reported with this drug,” said Peter J. Schumaker, director of the FDA’s Center for Drug Evaluation and Research. “We are still working on other drug options, and it will take several months before Celebrex is available to patients.”
As part of the approval, Novartis has made Celebrex available to patients who are suffering from heart disease.
“This is a great opportunity to help prevent heart attacks and strokes in people who are already suffering,” said Janice Bierman, a spokeswoman for Novartis.
Celebrex is a prescription-only medication used to treat arthritis, back pain and other types of pain. It’s also used to treat symptoms of depression and anxiety.
According to the FDA, Celebrex may also help patients with heart disease who are at increased risk for a heart attack or stroke.
In December, the FDA approved a new drug that is also available as a prescription medication for arthritis pain and for treating pain associated with arthritis. The drug is scheduled for approval by the FDA in December.
The drug is already being used as a heart medication, meaning Celebrex will be made available to patients by Novartis, as well as a more convenient route of administration.
